Installation Kit for keyhole hangers in 3 of Allison Brown’s Pieces: World Egg, The Aeroplane and the Radio, Snakeskin and Lace.

Hey, thanks for putting up with the keyhole hangers! I live really close to the gallery, so text/call/write any time. I’d love to drop in during installation, and I can often walk over on pretty short notice. I don’t usually pick up for unknown numbers, but would respond to leaving a message or texting. My number is (703) 216-5354, and you can reach me at allisonmbrownart@gmail.com.  Leo said he thought Vanessa might be doing the installation, and if so, hi! Hope the charcoal drawings are going well 🙂

Instructions

Fastener location marker illustration (above):

Panel 1: Turn the head to loosen the plunger.

Panel 2: Insert the tool from the large end of the slot. Slide it upwards into the slot.

Panel 3: Rotate the head so that the tool tightens on the slot.

Panel 4: Remove the cap.

Panel 5: Press the piece against the wall, then remove. The fastener location will be marked with red ink.

Keyhole hangers attach to the back of a piece, then slide down over the head of a screw in the wall. For a video demo of these pieces, see the links at the top of the webpage.

For World Egg and Snakeskin and Lace, tear off a short strip of the low tack painter’s tape. Stick the ends together with the sticky side out. Attach it to the bottom of the miniature level. For World Egg, stick the other surface to the top of the middle metal rim. For Snakeskin and Lace, stick it to the top of a metal rim. The included painter’s tape won’t damage the paint (but other types might, please use the enclosed one).

Engage a wall marker with each keyhole as shown above–having a second person will make this easier and safer. Remove the caps on the free end, then make sure the bubble in the level is in the center of the level. Keeping level, press to the wall where you want to mount the piece. If this piece itself is level, the screws may not look level. The hardware on the piece isn’t precisely placed.

For The Aeroplane and the Radio, engage one wall marker with the top keyhole plate as shown above (two wont fit at the same time). Remove the cap on the free end, then press to the wall where you want to mount the piece. Put a screw in. Use the plumb bob to make a mark 1 ¼ inches below it, making sure it’s in a straight vertical line by letting the washer dangle from thread wrapped around the red card. There are two green flags taped around the thread. Place the bottom of the first flag over the spot you marked, then make another mark at the top of the third.

If mounting on wood, Press the tip of the center punch against marked spots until the spring is triggered. This will leave a dent. Put a screw in each dent and tap it in lightly with a hammer or the end of the provided screwdriver. Leave the head of the screw sticking out about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch so the keyhole plate will be able to grab it.

If mounting on drywall, tap the end of the double headed drywall screw into the wall and screw it in. No center punch or anchor is needed.

Once the screws are in, match the holes in the keyhole plates to the screws on the wall. Slide the piece down, trapping the heads of the screws in the slots. If you’re not sure if the keyholes have engaged with the screws, assume they haven’t. Don’t worry about scratching the back of the pieces.

Wood screws: #8 x 3/4″ Deep Coarse Thread Phillips Modified Truss Head.
Use these to mount the piece on a wooden wall. Drywall screws are more brittle and prone to breakage, especially in hardwoods.

Drywall Screws: 3/4“ Double headed bear claw screw. Very short distance between heads..  Don’t drill a pilot hole or add an anchor. The anchor is built in.
